The history of Polignano a Mare is very rich and ancient.

The city has its origins in the Neolithic, we find traces of this history in the hamlet of Santa Barbara. Around the IV century BC Dionysius II of Syracuse founded the Neapolis’s Greek city. From the sixth century Polignano was under the control of the Byzantine Empire and under the Orthodox religion. With the Normans in the 12th century AD the country begins to develop. It is the Benedictines who built two monasteries and developed commercial relations with Venetians and other merchants of coastal cities. The Doge chose Polignano as his home, today we can still see his palace. In the seventeenth century, Charles V, the emperor of Spain, conquered the territory of Polignano and built defense towers along the coast during the Aragonese domination that are still visible today. Our country contains several points of historical and cultural interest.

The Mother Church dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta was built in the historic center and houses works by Di Stefano da Putignano. Also important is the work of Bartolomeo Vivarini the "Madonna with child and saints". In the church are kept the relics of San Vito precisely a fragment of the arm and the patella of the knee.Another important point of interest is the Abbey of San Vito. It houses part of the Via Traiana and defense buildings dating back to Charles V. Today it is used to host tourists from all over the world and hosts one of the stops of Red Bull cliff diving.Our town today is inhabited by about 18,000 inhabitants. The development of the town took place on a rocky ridge overlooking the Adriatic Sea, which makes it very suggestive and appreciated by the whole world. Our economy was based before the 2000s. on agriculture and fisheries. Today Our economy is based on tourism. In Polignano a Mare we host the review of "The possible book". The event allows authors, artists and leading national and international personalities to perform on one of the most important stages of the Apulian culture. The villages close to Polignano such as Castellana Grotte, Monopoli, Conversano and Mola di Bari, thanks to the fame of Polignano, are now able to develop tourism.
